Can It Be That It Was All So Simple Then?

Cue Wu-Tang... (Don't get the reference? Google it and immerse yourself in some 90's hip hop.)

As kids we laughed, we played, we imagined, we created. We spent HOURS doing this stuff. Time was a vacuum and we had fun on a daily basis.

We didn't stress, we didn't have anxiety, we didn't worry about what others thought. Okay...we did but we didn't obsess over it the way today's kids do. I believe social media and non-stop access to information is to blame for a lot of the stress today's kids have, but that's a topic for another day.

For most us, it wasn't until puberty hit and hormones kicked in that the drama really started. Before you knew it, you blinked and you were an adult. Paying bills, most likely working a job you don't love just so you can pay the bills.

You might even be one of those people who get sucked into doing things because it's "what you are supposed to do". Marriage, owning a home, having kids, you name it. Family and the way you were raised can put a lot of expectations on you and end up impacting the way you live your life.

Want to tap into this topic more? Check out this post.

It's all really draining when you stop to think about it.

Prompt: How many decisions have you made in your life because you felt that it was what you were supposed to do...or you made that choice because you didn't want to let someone down?

It's funny that we all joke about hating adulting, yet we couldn’t wait to be older, right?

As kids we thought adults had it all and they were just using their amazing adult powers to ruin our lives and keep us from having fun.

Turns out adults are just tired, stressed and want to sit in silence without worrying about anyone else’s nonsense for a little while. Who knew?!

We had it so wrong, didn’t we?

Looking back, I wish I held on longer to the carefree life I had as a kid for as long as I could have. I wish I didn't rush growing up and cherished the carefree days of summer vacation and winter break for all that it was.

Playing outside, roller skating, bike riding, drawing...just being creative and stretching my imagination ALL. DAY. LONG. without a care in the world. It sounds like a dream job now, if I’m being honest. I believe it's why entrepreneurship is on the rise too! It's more people wanting to reclaim their freedom. I know it is for me.

So how do you get back to that carefree way of living?

Well start by sitting back and reminiscing about what you enjoyed as a kid.

  • What did you wake up yearning to do each day?

  • What consumed all of your time as a kid?

  • What put a giant smile on your face?

  • What did you create or learn about and then drive your parents nuts talking about it or asking them to look at because you were so damn proud?

  • What did you talk about non-stop?

  • What did you dream about?

  • What did you get lost in for hours on end but it only felt like you were working on it for a few minutes?

If you took the time to answer these questions above, you should have a pretty solid list of places to start and things to try to tap back into your passions.

Whatever those childhood passions were, I bet they will spark passion in you today or put you on the right path ...ready to give it a try?

Good! Now clear out some time on your boring adult calendar and do it! I bet it makes you smile and sparks a new fire within you.
